Accessible features on this website

We have put accessibility features in place that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser or other tools
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate to content and navigation using ‘skip links’
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard, including contact forms
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
  • use video transcripts to understand video content.

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand and has a reading age of 10 and a half years old.

What needs more work

This website went live on 26/05/2021. An in-depth review of the site only highlighted the following issues:

  • Hotjar feedback plugin is not fully accessible, with issues such as contrast errors, empty buttons and missing form labels. Please email us with any feedback instead.
  • The website has only one pdf file, a Carer's Newsletter, which is not fully accessible.

How we test this website

This website was last tested on 28 June 2021.

This website is tested each week by the Silktide accessibility testing platform, which makes automated checks of this websit'es content against the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards using automated testing techniques.

We also regularly perform manual checks using the WAVE accessibility toolbar.

Compliance status

The latest Silktide report found this website to have achieved:

  • Level A - 98% compliance
  • Level AA - 98% compliance
  • Level AAA - 98% compliance

We are working towards full compliance by ensuring the PDF is formatted correctly.

What we're doing to improve accessibility

Following initial launch of this website in May 2021, we have a put series of procedures in place to ensure this website remains accessible. These include:

  • Ongoing training programmes for designers, developers, website contributors and moderators on how to deliver accessible web pages from the ground-up.
  • A dedicated website administrator tasked to identify and address accessibility issues in response to user feedback and Silktide reports.
  • Investigating ways of testing with real users across all of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's websites.
